MAGNET AND ALTERNATIVE SCHOOLS

The Wichita Public School district realizes that top quality education doesn't come in a one-size-fits all package and therefore offers a wide variety of choices to help obtain that educational match between students and school.  Wichita Public Schools have choices that have been developed in collaboration with students, parents, dedicated citizens and the business community.  Magnet schools, alternative schools and special programs demonstrate the customized approach to education that we have to offer.

A magnet school is a public school that offers a very special curriculum designed around a specific theme.  It offers students the opportunity to study subjects or experience a teaching method in addition to the basic curriculum.

Alternative secondary schools (grades 6-12) were developed for students who find the traditional school setting not meeting their educational needs.  The environment at alternative schools is generally smaller and more flexible than that of a traditional school.  Alternative schools help students who need more one-on-one instruction, a flexible schedule or are behind on credits. Click here for the alternative web page.

Special programs are available at many of the middle and high schools and provide yet another avenue for students to grow in specialized area of education.  Please click here for the special programs web page.

Applications for alternative and special programs are submitted directly to those schools for processing and are not handled through the Magnet Admissions Office.

1.   Students must submit an application; up to three schools can be selected.

a.  Siblings who have a current magnet student attending a magnet school must submit an on time application to reserve a seat in order to receive sibling priority to the same school.  Any Pre-K students assigned to a magnet school does not count as a sibling attending as we do not begin to magnet assign a student until Kindergarten.

b.  Students must be 5 on or before August 31st to be eligible for Kindergarten.

2.  All on time applications are then put into a random computerized lottery for first choice schools.

5.  Students respond by accepting or declining.

6.  For students that decline placement the next student on the wait-list will be offered a seat, this will continue until all seats are filled.
